Australian seed fern leaf permian fossil crystal slab

A collectors specimen for a history enthusiast, a plant lover or indigenous collector. Glossopteris fossil seed fern leaves in claystone. This slab has several hematite-stained leaf impressions in Austrailan rock. Glossopteris has tremendous significance in the history of geology. The modern-day geographic distribution pattern of Glossopteris fossils was a key piece of paleontological evidence used in formulating Continental Drift Hypothesis, the precursor idea to the Theory of Plate Tectonics. The name Glossopteris is Latinized from two Greek words meaning “tongue-fern”, referring to the elongated shape of individual leaves.

26 x 11cm. 680g.  Ethically sourced fossilized seed fern leaves from Australia. Glossopteris brownii, Fossil Plant Leaf, Illawarra Mine, Dunedoo, NSW Australia. Stand not included.

CRYSTALLISED / FOSSILIZED LEAVES:

The Permian is a geologic period and stratigraphic system which spans 47 million years from the end of the Carboniferous Period 298.9 million years ago, to the beginning of the Triassic Period. During the Permian Period, all the world's landmasses were joined into a single continent that spread from pole to pole. Terrestrial Fossil plants thrived during the warm and wet Carboniferous Period, where they formed huge coal-producing swamps and forests. Seed ferns declined as more advanced plants evolved, and eventually went extinct along with the dinosaurs.
