Vintage: era mid 1900s.

A small ceramic vintage style phrenology head with crackled finish and fantastic detail. An oddity to complete every aspiring medico's desk. Phrenology is the study of the human skull. It is based on the concept that the brain is the organ of the mind, and that certain brain areas have specific functions. An American leading phrenologist of his time, L.N. Fowler, gained considerable fame with his phrenology head, which has become a symbol of the discipline. This bust is made from ceramic, and hand-painted in an antique white crackle finish with a phrenological map of the different faculties. The base has a lid for an inkwell for a feather quill (not included).
